Runnymede Swimming Club has continued their most successful year so far with some outstanding results at this years ASA East Region Age Group Championships held at the U.E.A Pool in Norwich. Following their successful County Championships earlier in the year the clubs swimmers have excelled again at the Regional Championships by finishing as the 6th Top Club in the East of the Country. Swimmers achieving the required Qualifying Times representing 6 Counties took part in the Championships and Runnymede had amazing tally of 18 Medals at the Age Group and 1 from the Youths competition in May to put the squad 6th on the Final Medal Table. The Clubs swimmers reached an incredible total of 31 Championship Finals.
Talented Barton Townley competing in the 10 years age group who is one of the Runnymede’s up and coming stars had an amazing Championship scooping a Grand Total of 10 Championship Medals over the 2 weekends. Barton finished as 2nd Top Boy in his age group narrowly missing the Top spot by only a few points. Barton showed what a promising up and coming star he is and is a name to look out for the future by winning an incredible 5 Gold Medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m Freestyle, 400m I/M and 100m Backstroke events; a Silver Medal in the 200m I/M 4 Bronze Medals in the 200m Backstroke, 100m and 200m Fly and 100m Breaststroke and also finished in 4th place in the 200m Breaststroke.
14 year old Jason Daniels also had some outstanding results in the Championships with excellent swims in all of the events that he had qualified in. Jason won the Silver Medal in the 100m Backstroke and 2 Bronze Medals in the 200m Backstroke and 200m Fly events. Also an extremely talented swimmer Jason is now very close to achieving National Qualifying Times in his age group, also reached the Finals in 3 other events, 100m Fly where he finished in 5th place and was 6th in the 400m Freestyle and 400m I/M events.
Ellie Townley also had excellent competition in the 11 year age group winning a silver Medal in 200m Freestyle, 2 Bronze medals in the 100m and 800m Freestyle events. She also went on to take 4th place in the 400m freestyle and 8th place in the 400m I/M.
Long distance swimmer Adam Carter competing in the 14 years age group had some excellent swims in his events achieving top 8 places in all 3 long distance events. Adam had a great swim in the 800m Freestyle event where he won the Bronze Medal, he then also finished in 4th place in the 1500m Freestyle and 8th place in the 400m.
Runnymede’s youngest Medal winner was 10 year old Ellie Pirrie who was competing in her first ever Regional Championships. Ellie rose to the occasion with some amazing swimming in the Butterfly events where she won the Bronze Medal in the 100m and was 7th in the 200m.
Other swimmers from the squad to reach the Finals were Henry Newton (12 years) who was 4th in the 200m Fly and 6th in the 100m Fly events; Charlotte Hartin (11 years) was 5th in the 100m Breaststroke. Madison Townley (10years) finished in 6th place in the 200m Fly, 7th in the 400m I/M and 8th in the 200m I/M; Alex Delicata (13 years) 7th place in the 400m I/M and 8th in the 200m Fly; Chloe Davis (13 years) finished 8th in the 1500m Freestyle; and Rory Geoghegan (11 years) finished in 8th place in the 100m Breaststroke.
Runnymede had a record total of 24 swimmers this year achieving the qualifying times necessary to compete in this competition ranging from 10 years to 16 years of age. The other swimmers from the Club who also qualified to compete at the Rgional Championships were Thomas Giles, Ryan Daniels, Patrick Neary, Shannon Wennington, James Carter, Melissa Knighton, Matthew Winnell and James Winnell.
