Officials

If you feel like taking on something a little different, then perhaps you may like to think about becoming an ASA Official.  Officials are extremely important to swimming as they are required at all galas run under ASA & FINA regulations, and there is always a shortage of them.  The club will help you become an official, by paying your examination fees, offering advice and assistance, and poolside training.  The starting point is to become a qualified Timekeeper, and as most parents are familiar with a stopwatch it isn't that difficult to take the step to becoming an ASA Official.

Why not talk to one of the club's qualified officials to see what is involved, or offer to help at one of the club's regular time trials.

ASA EXAMINATIONS FOR SWIMMING OFFICIALS - TIMEKEEPER, JUDGE, STARTER

Candidates must be a member of a club or organisation affiliated to the ASA or one of its Regions. The minimum age for a candidate is 16 years (timekeeper) or 18 years (judge or starter) as at 31st December in the year of the examination. Application should be made by completing the ECASA form and sending it together with the appropriate fee to the County Organiser.  The forms are available from the club's official's coordinator or from the Essex County ASA website.

The order in which the examinations are held and the times allowed are: Timekeeper - 40 minutes; Judge - 60 minutes; Starter - 35 minutes, with a minimum 5 minute break between each paper. Examinations are available for:

  1. Timekeeper only
  2. Judge only
  3. Starter only
  4. Timekeeper & Judge
  5. Timekeeper, Judge & Starter.

Each examination is in two parts comprising a written examination, which if passed, leads to a practical test. Written examinations must be taken in the order timekeeper, judge, and starter. The same applies to the practical test. All candidates are strongly advised to attend an approved course of instruction organised by the County, details of which will be advised at the time you apply, but it is usual for the course to be run at the nearby Pitsea Leisure Centre.  You are encouraged to gain as much practical experience as possible before taking your examination and all candidates should also study the Laws of the Sport.

Subject to passing the examinations, newly qualified officials are then eligible for inclusion in the County’s list of swimming officials.
