RUNNYMEDE QUALIFY FOR DIVISION 2 FINALS

Press Report on the National Speedo League – Enfield 13th November 2004

Runnymede Swimming Club will be heading for the London Region Division 2 Finals in December in their first year back in the National Speedo League, with a chance of promotion to Division 1.  The club are currently lying in 5th position, just outside the top 4 automatic promotion places with only the Finals at Enfield to go. A 3rd position in the Finals would possibly be enough to take the club into the top division.  Head Coach Paul Eveleigh said "We hoped to be in this position at the end of 2005 with an eye on promotion to Division 1, so we are obviously delighted to have come so far in our first season.  Even if we don't make it this time, we have performed way above our expectations in our first year, so this is fantastic for the club's future."

Round 2 of the competition saw Runnymede finish in 2nd place behind the runaway league leaders Hemel Hempstead.  Runnymede collected 15 first place finishes, 7 second and 5 third places from 50 races to secure a solid all round performance.

One of the club's top performers in Round 2 was Matthew Scott, who excelled in the boys 13yr & under 100m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle events to take 1st place in a very competitive field.  Samantha Knight performed well in the 13yr & under 100m Breaststroke to win her race and also produced another good swim for 4th position in the 15yr & under age group.

In the youngest age group Blue Newton battled well in the boys 10-11yr 50m Freestyle, just winning his race in a very tight finish.  Blue was joined by team-mates Alex Delicata, George Smith and William Muggleton for the relay races where they took 1st in the 4x50m Medley Relay, and 2nd in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay.  In the girls 10-11yr age group, Laura Humphreys won the 50m Butterfly, a 1st in the 4x50m Medley Relay, 2nd in the 50m Backstroke and 2nd in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay with fellow team members Chloe Davis, Sara Trenery and Jennifer Lamb.

12 year-old Charlotte Davis repeated her performances from Round 1 of the league where she won the 100 Butterfly in her own age group and then stepped up to win the same race in the Ladies Open event.  Charlotte picked up another two 1st places with relay team members Sarah Wright, Georgie Hunt, Verity Goodey and Charlie Beale in the 4x50m Freestyle and Medley Relays.  Aaron Eveleigh had a hat-trick of successes with wins in the boys 15yr and under 100m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle, and also the Mens Open 100m Butterfly.  Sarah Wright was again in total control in her 13yr & under 100m Backstroke race, and lead from start to finish to take a deserved 1st place.

Other good swims came from:

  • Charlotte Delicata – 2nd 15yr & under 100m Backstroke, 3rd Ladies Open 200m Individual Medley
  • George Smith - 2nd 10-11yr 50m Butterfly.
